Back To School Tips

How to Start the School Year Successfully

Summer camps and family trips are wrapping up and school supplies are available in most stores- that means it’s almost time to head back to the classroom! In addition to purchasing glue sticks, pencils, new backpacks, and lunchboxes, there are many other ways to prepare for the school year.

Angie Woodall, Youth and Family Coordinator at the Salem Family YMCA has some great tips for parents and caregivers:

  1. Start a bedtime routine several weeks before the start of school, don’t wait until the night before school begins!
  2. Preparing the next day's clothes, bookbag, and lunch can help both parents and children feel less rushed in the morning.
  3. Communicate afterschool plans with your child, the child's teacher, and any caregivers that may be helping with afterschool care.

Elizabeth Brehob, Childcare Director at the Kirk Family YMCA suggests checking your school release time. "The school system has just changed the start times for the elementary schools so double-check the times to make sure the kids are not late!" Other tips include:

  1. Make sure the school supplies are ready! The sales have started in stores across the city. Check out the great deals to ensure all children are set up for success on day one!
  2. If your child is attending a new school, be sure to attend orientations, events, and activities that are available prior. Your kiddo will feel much more comfortable if they are able to meet their teachers and new classmates prior to their first day!
  3. Arrange for Y After School Childcare! We are happily able to serve various elementary schools in the area. Is there no program at your building? Speak with your office staff or give the Childcare Director a call to see if something can be arranged!

We hope you find these tips helpful and your 2023-2024 school year starts successfully. For more information on our Y After School program, and to check availability, please visit: https://ymcavbr.org/yafterschool
