Rockbridge Area YMCA Steps In to Absorb Rockbridge County Preschool Operations

February 18, 2026

LEXINGTON, Va. (Feb. 18, 2026)  — The Rockbridge Area YMCA is excited to announce that it will absorb and sustain operations of Rockbridge County’s long-standing preschool program beginning July 1, 2026 ensuring continued access to early childhood education for local families.

On Jan. 28, the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors voted to transfer the preschool program to the Rockbridge Area YMCA. “This preschool has served Rockbridge County families for more than four decades, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue that work and for the strong partnership with the county and Board of Supervisors,” said Chad Whitmer, executive director of the Rockbridge Area YMCA.

The preschool will continue operating with the same services families rely on today, serving approximately 45 children across four locations in Goshen, Glasgow, Fairfield and Effinger.

“Our goal is simple: keep what’s working, support families, and ensure a smooth transition,” said Whitmer.

Gwen Whitmore, childcare director of the Rockbridge Area YMCA Early Learning Center is excited to support even more families in the community. “Preparing the children in our community for kindergarten is at the heart of what we do and we’re so very grateful for the opportunity to welcome 45 more kids into our Y family and continue to do what we do best.”
