As Winter Nears, Hot Yoga Brings Warmth and Wellness Year-Round
Roanoke, VA (November 19, 2025) – As temperatures drop, members at the YMCA at Tanglewood are turning to hot yoga for warmth, strength and mental well-being. The Y has expanded its hot class schedule offerings, held at more than 100 degrees, and members have welcomed the change.
“Hot yoga is especially beneficial in the colder months because the heat helps loosen muscles more quickly and supports deeper stretching,” said Erin Lewis, group exercise administrator at the YMCA at Tanglewood. “Members tell us the combination of warmth, movement and breathing helps manage seasonal stress and gives them a consistent sense of focus.”
Research supports the benefits. A Harvard Medical School study found that eight weeks of yoga practice can significantly reduce symptoms of depression. Additional studies show that warm-temperature classes may help improve circulation, boost calorie burn, support joint mobility in colder weather and increase mental clarity — making hot yoga a valuable winter wellness tool.
“Other studies have found that practicing in a heated environment can increase circulation, support flexibility, and may help participants maintain consistent physical activity during the colder months.” added Lewis.
