Rich and Elizabeth Macher Teaching Kitchen

The YMCA Express at Gainsboro is excited to offer community programs focused on nutrition, culinary education and healthy cooking in the Rich and Elizabeth Macher Teaching Teaching Kitchen. Cooking classes are for families, seniors, teens, adults, and youth. Our culinary programs are designed to empower individuals and families with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make healthy, affordable meals, encouraging healthier eating habits in our community.

We are also proud to partner with organizations in the Roanoke Valley to host programs and also work with local farms to promote the use of fresh produce and community-supported agriculture.

Our future chefs will explore how to prepare delicious food items utilizing harvested vegetables and fruits from our community garden. This plot to plate process will develop fundamental culinary skills such as knife skills, sauteing, roasting, braising, baking, and fresh preparations that will highlight the importance of healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.

This program is offered quarterly on Saturdays from 10:00 - 11:00 am for children ages 6 - 16 years old.

Our Cooking With Me program consists of three components: After School Nutrition, Middle School Nutrition, and Adult Cooking Classes. This initiative is being made possible because of a grant from the Kroger Foundation and a commitment by the YMCA and Kroger Mid-Atlantic to improve the nutritional health of the community. Cooking with Me programs are at no cost to participants - Learn more
