Jacob Day – Central Elementary School Y After School Volunteer

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: I am a freshman at Washington and Lee University and at the moment I have no idea what I want to major in. I was born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, a town 25 minutes south of Nashville. Besides serving at the YMCA after-school program, I am involved in RUF, an acapella group called General Admission, the Bonner program, and the RUF worship band. My favorite things to do outside my activities are play soccer, play guitar, and hangout on the Colonnade with my friends.

Q: How did you first get involved with the Y?
A: I first got involved with the Y through the Bonner program. It is a program at Washington and Lee that supports students' ambitions to become more involved in the Rockbridge community. Coming in as a freshman I knew I wanted to do something with kids but I did not know what or where at the time. After searching for a place to do my service, I decided to start at the Y because it seemed like a perfect fit for what I want to do and where I thought I could make the biggest difference in the community.

Q: What is the best thing to happen since you started working at the Y?
A: Since starting at the Y back in the fall, my best moment was when I walked back into the gym at Central Elementary School after a long winter break to excited hugs from the kids. After a long winter break I was not sure if they would still remember me, but their response has been a highlight during my time in Lexington so far.

Q: What do you wish other people knew about the Y?
A: I wish other people knew the amazing opportunities the YMCA offers. Before working at one of the YMCA’s after school programs, I did not realize the wonderful and variety of activities the YMCA offered to Lexington and the greater Rockbridge area, especially for children.

The YMCA is always looking for volunteers interested in giving back to their community. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, please contact the Rockbridge YMCA's welcome desk at 540.464.9622.
