Volunteer Spotlight - George Hardy

April 19, 2018

Q: Tell me a little about yourself.
A: I am married with two daughters who both live in Charlotte, NC and one grandson in his first year of college in NC. I am retired from Yokohama Tire Company and am very active in my church work which also involves community outreach which led me to do what I am doing at the Y.

Q: How did you first get involved with the Y?
A: I was involved with the MEN IN ACTION mentoring program at Fleming High School and invited Will, a current YMCA Express at Gainsboro volunteer, to help me with this program. In that process Will shared with me what he was doing at the Y and it’s all history from there.

Q: What is the best thing that has happened to you since I started working with the Y?
A: After seeing the lack in participation trying to be a mentor, I was encouraged by the youth that are involved at the Y. They are so energetic and forward thinking which really impressed me and encouraged me to want to be a part of the Y Teens Program.

Q: What do I wish others knew about the Y?
A: Most people think of the Y as a place to go exercise. I did not even know about all of the other Y programs until Will shared them with me.

The YMCA is always looking for volunteers interested in giving back to their community. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, please contact the YMCA Express at Gainsboro's welcome desk at 540.344.9622.
